Cloverdale Hall in line for special recognition.

A vote this week by the Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Buckland council has helped pave the way for Cloverdale Hall to be designated as a Municipal Heritage building.

The hall, built in 1919, still serves a number of purposes including a popular place for meetings and social functions for the snowmobile and four wheeler clubs. The R.M’s Acting Administrator Cori Sarginson said, among other things, the designation helps protect the building.

“It helps protect the structure itself from being torn down or you have to kind of go through some hoops to make any changes to it,” she said

Before any building in the province can receive the special designation, a bylaw must first be created by the municipality. And prior to council’s unanimous support Monday, a mail out was distributed weeks ago to advise any R.M. residents who may object to the designation, that they could have a chance to speak at a public hearing. No one showed up Monday to contest it.

In addition to helping protect the building, the designation also makes it easier for the hall’s board to apply for and receive grants. Board member Arthur Brandolino said the outside of the building was renovated last year but the inside needs some work.

“We have been trying to have a better system for heating,” he explained.

There is still some work to be done before the status becomes official. The province’s Heritage Conservation branch receives a copy of the new bylaw and then updates their website. The actual title of the property must also get registered.
