Raiders reach to familiar trade partner to bolster blueline

Shortly after releasing two 19-year-old defencemen, the Prince Albert Raiders bolstered their blueline.

They acquired 18-year-old Remy Aquilon from the Victoria Royals, a common trade partner with the Raiders in recent years, in exchange for a seventh-round selection in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft.

Aquilon appeared in 50 games for the Royals last year in his first full WHL season, registering four assists and 20 penalty minutes.

“Remy is a real nice skater,” Raiders general manager Curtis Hunt said in a statement. “We’re excited to add him to our roster. He fits a need in an age group that we don’t have. He can contribute in all three zones and we look forward to seeing him in a Raider sweater.”

Earlier on Wednesday, the Raiders released a pair of 2000-born defencemen in Loeden Schaufler and Konrad Belcourt.

Aquilon is now the only defenceman currently on the Raiders roster that’s either 18 or 19, as he’s a 2001-born d-man. The rest are either in their 20-year-old season (Brayden Pachal, Zack Hayes, Max Martin, Jeremy Masella), 2002-born (Kaiden Guhle, Landon Kosior, Braydon Clark) or a true 2003-born rookie in Nolan Allan.

The Raiders have acquired a ton of players from the Royals in recent years.

Last year alone, they added Dante Hannoun at the deadline and the rights to Noah Gregor in the offseason from the Royals. They also got their current captain Brayden Pachal and defender Jeremy Masella from the Royals in past years.
