Teen girl killed in house fire: RCMP

Sep 10, 2019 | 11:06 AM

There are still many more questions than answers following a tragic event last weekend on Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation, south of Prince Albert.

In a media release Tuesday, RCMP said the teenage girl was the lone occupant in the residence when the fire broke out Sunday afternoon. Cpl. Rob King told paNOW investigators don’t know the cause of the fire yet.

“We consider every fire suspicious until it’s been proven otherwise,” he said.

The investigation is being conducted by the RCMP Major Crimes Unit North, Forensic Identification Section, Rosthern Detachment, Saskatchewan Coroners Service and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency. An autopsy scheduled for Tuesday will confirm the identity of the victim. Band Councilor Kevin Seesequasis has posted several updates on the band’s website, and has encouraged band members to cooperate with investigators.

“We ask all community members to avoid the area directly surrounding the home and refrain from speculation. I will continue to update the community as needed. I will continue to pray for our affected families and our community,” he said.

Seesequasis said the Willow Cree Health Services Emergency Crisis Line is available for individuals requiring mental health support or a home visit. Willow Cree Health Services is also open for individual band members to access one-on-one mental health supports.
