More than 135 divers were given tickets for speeding in the recent Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) initiative hosted by the Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS). A further 70 drivers and passengers were cited for not wearing their seat belts.

The tickets were issued as part of the traffic enforcement blitz in the city Aug.22 and 23 that featured various agencies from around the province.

According to a media release from PAPS, 28 fines were handed out for distracted driving and officers issues many tickets and warnings under the Traffic Safety Act related to vehicle equipment regulations.

Three vehicles were seized during the two-day initiative and two people were arrested on outstanding warrants.

In all, over 500 tickets and warnings were handed out.

As part of the project 117 car seats were also checked and 14 free car seats were given away to families who needed them.

The goal of the STEP initiative, which is a partnership between several provincial law enforcement agencies and SGI, is to improve road safety and reduce injuries and fatalities on our roads.
