The Prince Albert District Labour Council broke out the grill to celebrate Labour Day Monday afternoon.

The labour council invited the community to come out to have a meal to mark the occasion with burgers, hot dogs and pasta salad served up by volunteers.

Darren Smith, chair of the P.A. District Labour Council said the goal of the barbecue is to show appreciation to those working in the community, who are both union and non-union members.

“We want to thank them, its open to the public for everyone to come and enjoy a meal, we like to serve as many people as we can and thank them for the labour they have done,” he said.

Smith added the barbecue is a nice way for the unions, which make up the labour council to give back to the community. Many appear to appreciate the event as according to Smith their were people knocking at the doors to be let in before noon.

Besides the opportunity to give back, Smith said it is important to come together to mark the day itself.

“Throughout the country people have fought for labour rights and it’s in recognition of those rights that we celebrate today, for all the people that have laboured,” he said.

The event was indoors at the Union Centre, with the grill set up in a trailer behind the building, which kept everyone protected from the rain. Smith said in past years there had been attempts to do the event outdoors, but the weather usually pushed things in doors.

“Now we just do it here anyways,” he said.
