Collision risk doubles on long weekends: SGI

Drivers hitting the road this Labour Day Long weekend will want to exercise a bit more caution.

According to a media release from Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI), the risk of a collision doubles during long weekends.

“There is just that many more people travelling on the long weekends, so the number of incidents increase,” Minister responsible for SGI, Joe Hargrave told paNOW. “It’s the last weekend before school so there are people going out camping and there is that many more people on the road.”

In the release, SGI noted drivers should never drive impaired. They should always wear a seat belt, obey the speed limit, avoid texting while driving, and make sure they’re well rested before getting behind the wheel.

“Those are the keys,” Hargrave said. “Remember to be safe on the highway.”

“Obviously you (have to) drive very cautiously but you can’t foresee what another driver is going to do so always drive defensively,” he said. “Take every precaution, pay attention.”

SGI stated in the release to check the highway hotline before you plan your trip and be mindful of work zones as there is plenty of construction still taking place. In work zones drivers should reduce their speeds and watch for workers.
