Halle Gaudry admits a little more pressure is riding on her performance this weekend as it is in front of a hometown crowd.

But, in being close to home, she has a greater variety of horses to call on, which she hopes will give her an edge as the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Association, for the first time, is at Prince Albert’s Red River Riding and Roping Arena over the weekend.

During the two-day event, both senior and junior 11- to 18-year-olds compete for points for a chance to make it to nationals next year.

With Gaudry’s two wins in junior girl’s breakaway roping and junior girl’s goat tying she moves one step closer to the next level and is excited for the opportunity.

“Meeting lots of new people and it’s always great competition and lots of people are friendly and supporting, too,” she said.

When asked who she looks up to in the rodeo world, Gaudry was quick to point to her father Lawrence as her inspiration.

“He has always helped me throughout my life and him trying to reach his goals is reaching my goals,” she said.

Competition will continue Sunday at 9 a.m. where all 100 junior and senior riders will compete for more points.

Event coordinator Larry Henry said so far, the weekend is a success.

“There is a lot of work and preparation that goes in for the kids to get to this stage and most of these kids are riding six days a week and practicing all the disciplines they take part in,” Henry said.
