With students preparing to embark upon brand new school year, PAPS members are taking the opportunity to remind everyone to stay safe.

“Everyone’s been on holidays and we’re not used to those school zones,” Sergeant Travis Willie told paNOW.

Officers will be visible and enforcing the school season speed limit of 30 km/h.

“Of course we’re going to enforce the speed limit, but it is about educating the public,” he said.

Willie explained school zones will be congested and that’s why it’s important for drivers to be extra vigilant.

“Expect those little ones to be darting out and if you have that mindset, then you’re really being defensive and we’re going to keep our kids and community safe,” he said. “I think as a whole we (Prince Albert) do pretty good, we are aware, but it just takes a second.”

Willie said it’s important for parents to have conversations with their kids as well. Encouraging them to cross at a crosswalks, look both ways and ensure cars are going to stop for you before crossing.

Prince Albert’s 2019/2020 school year begins on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
