Family members have used social media to identify the man who was shot and killed during a confrontation with RCMP officers on the Fishing Lake First Nation on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, various social media posts said the man was Lucien Silverquill.

According to a media release from the RCMP, officers from the Wadena detachment were called to a home on the First Nation on Tuesday just before 1:30 p.m., for a complaint of a man causing a disturbance.

Two RCMP officers responded and found a man with a knife outside a home. Shortly after the officers arrived, at least one of them shot and injured the man.

Paramedics were called, but the man died at the scene. The officers weren’t injured.

According to the release, the RCMP “has requested an independent external police investigation into the circumstances of this incident. The Moose Jaw Police Service will be conducting this investigation.”

As well, an independent observer from the provincial Ministry of Justice will be appointed to monitor the investigation.

The Fishing Lake First Nation is approximately 210 kilometres northeast of Regina.
