P.A. set to host provincial rodeo competition

The Red River Roping and Riding Arena will play host to the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Association this coming weekend.

Larry Henry, who is the coordinator for the rodeo, said there is a healthy sized contingent of competitors set to take part.

“We have about 100 junior and high school youth that’ll be coming from across Saskatchewan and competing in 13 various rodeo events,” he said.

The events on offer range from bull riding to many different forms of roping. Barrell racing will also take place.

Those taking part are coming from across the province. There are three people from the P.A. area who will be competing along with people from the Battlefords, Meadow Lake and Melfort. Competitors taking part range from 11 to 18 years old.

Henry said the competitors will have the chance to qualify for some bigger future competitions.

“The kids are all competing for points so they can attend nationals next June in the U.S. in 2020,” he said.

This is the first time the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo has been in P.A. The Red River Roping and Riding arena is north of the city off of Highway 2. It all begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with a pancake breakfast.

Besides the high school competition, the following Monday is the Toughest Cowboy Challenge. Those who place high enough in this competition will earn the right to travel to Las Vegas for the Mike and Sherry Johnson Toughest Cowboy Challenge.

“We have competitors coming from as far away as Montana and Alberta,” Henry said.
