“It was just perfect timing” P.A. comedian receives medal for bravery

A Prince Albert comedian is being recognized for some off-stage heroics.

Local comic and XFM Radio Host, Kelly Taylor recently found out he is receiving the Royal Canadian Humane Association’s, Bronze Medal for Bravery.

The award is a result of actions taken one year ago, when four comedians, including Taylor, were returning from a show in Stenen SK. Around 1:15 a.m. while passing Wadena, the group noticed a small fire starting at a motel, off the highway. The group quickly turned around to help.

“It was a crazy situation, it was just perfect timing, that’s all it was,” Kelly Taylor told paNOW. “We cruised up, hit the brakes and just started hammering on all the windows.”

After numerous and varied attempts, Taylor and his friends were able to subdue the fire.

“Once we got it out, people started to filter out (of their rooms). One guy didn’t even come out (of his room), so it could have been bad,” Taylor said.

Despite the potential disaster, he downplayed his role.

“It’s a nice honour to have but in the long run, it was just perfect timing. Who in their right mind wouldn’t stop for a fire? Put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. I would appreciate someone knocking on my window. I can’t imagine having my family in there,” Taylor said.

He explained that he may be unable to attend the official October Investiture Ceremony in Saskatoon due to his comedy schedule.

Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor, the Hon. Russell Mirasty is hosting the event.

“What impressed me about the incident was the fact that they turned around. Rather than say, ‘hey there’s a fire,’ and continue. They took steps to arouse the owner and the people in the motel,” he added.

“People may just drive by or not even take notice, but certainly they did go out of their way to make sure people were safe. I think that’s commendable,” Mirasty told paNOW.

He believes that the actions of the four Saskatchewan comedians highlights one the provinces strengths, our willingness to help others.

Mirasty extended a thanks as well to the Royal Canadian Human Association for their hard-work organizing and managing the awards.

Kelly Taylor is currently in the running for Sirius XM’s top comic.
