Risk of summer frost in Prince Albert

Aug 20, 2019 | 12:29 PM

Prince Albert and area gardeners who’ve meticulously picked weeds and pruned leaves all summer will want to take a few extra precautions tonight.

With temperatures dipping as low as plus three degrees, Environment Canada explained there is a risk of frost this evening and that could be a concern for some our ‘seedier’ friends.

“Cucumbers, pumpkins, squash, tomatoes, all those kinds of things,” Angie Bragg, owner of Wright’s Greenhouse in Melfort. “You can cover them up, blankets work the best. I would stay away from plastic, because plastic tends to attract the cold.”

“If you don’t have enough blankets, you can go out in the early morning (5 a.m.) and start watering everything and that helps prevent the frost from settling in on your plants,” Bragg said.

She added, root vegetables are safe during these early frosts and even pansies and petunias can withstand some hard frosts.

According to Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, tonight’s potential frost shouldn’t be too serious.

“It’s probably just going to be a touch of frost.” Terri Lang told paNOW. “Often in town you don’t get as cold temperatures, but out in the country away from the cities, into the low-lying areas there definitely is a risk of frost tonight.”

Lang explained that tonight’s cool temperatures should be short-lived. After the brief cool off, temperatures are expected to return to relatively normal levels.
