Magnitude 4.1 earthquake strikes Esterhazy area

It wasn’t the end to the peaceful family evening Grant Moore was expecting.

His house shook and chairs rocked as an earthquake hit the Esterhazy area Thursday night.

It was confirmed by the United States Geological Survey as a 4.1 magnitude quake that struck 17 kilometres east of the town at 8:30 p.m.

“It shook the chairs and the couch in here and the chimes in the door were shaking and rattling,” Moore said by telephone from his acreage southeast of Esterhazy.

“The kids were scared and my mother’s rocking chair started rocking, she said.”

It isn’t the first time Moore has experienced an earthquake. He recalls one in the area a couple of years ago.

Fortunately the one Thursday night didn’t last long.

“It probably lasted between three and five seconds, I guess,” Moore said.

Moore and many others were left without power as a result of the quake.

Luckily, no one in the family was hurt, but Moore will spend the day Friday assessing any damage.
