Prince Albert SPCA holds adoption event to help lower numbers

The Prince Albert SPCA is hosting a limited-time promotion in hopes of encouraging residents to adopt a pet into their home.

With eight dogs and well over 70 cats and kittens available for adoption, the SPCA told paNOW they are at maximum capacity, leading organizers to host an adopt-a-thon with reduced adoption prices.

“This is a provincial-wide event. All the shelters across Saskatchewan are trying to empty out and try to find homes for all of their animals. Each SPCA has a different promotion running,” SPCA manager Ashlee Bober said.

“This is the time of the year when a lot of shelters across the province are overfilled with animals, especially cats. So, this is kind of our big, yearly event to try and clear out the shelter so we can help other animals in need.”

Bober added the SPCA has consistently been at, or over capacity in terms of cats during the summer season. Currently more than 70 cats are residing at the Prince Albert SPCA, with an additional seven litters living in foster homes until they are old enough to be adopted.

“When people come in there is an adoption application to be filled out. Providing they are approved then we can start the process to get the animals home,” Bober said.

“The cats and dogs are spayed and neutered before they leave the shelter, they are vaccinated up to date, microchipped, we provide one month of pet insurance. We also provide a complimentary pet exam at one of the participating vet clinics in the city and we provide a complimentary coupon book for pet stores in the city.”

During the promotion, adult and junior cats over six months of age can be adopted for $20, kittens under six months for $40, and adult and junior dogs over six months for $200.

The promotion runs from August 15 to 17. Anyone interested is encouraged to contact the Prince Albert SPCA.
