The 2019 FSIN Youth Softball Championships have wrapped up.

The event saw nearly 1,000 coaches and players from 60 different communities come to Prince Albert to compete.

From an organizational standpoint ,the tournament was a success according to organizer Kevin Roberts.

“From the feedback and all of the comments, it was a successful event, so we’re pretty pleased with that. [And the] weather held out for us,” he said.

Roberts said they were pleased with the support they received from the business community in regards to sponsorships. He added they also appreciated the help they got from the City of Prince Albert in getting everything organized.

Games at the tournament were played at a number of facilities in the city, including Max Power Ball Parks. Roberts said having the chance to play on these fields was something players really appreciated.

“Kids were just loving the night ball experience, playing under the lights, having their name announced on the sound system. Kids love the facilities and they’re world class,” he said.

The biggest winners of the tournament were Ochapowace First Nation, which took home titles in four divisions including both under 18 boys and girls. Roberts said Ochapowace is a strong softball community with experienced players.

Andrew Daniels, who works for Ochapowace First Nation in minor sport development said the community’s success on the field can be traced to kids getting an early start.

“The kids really love softball. It’s a major softball community and most of them start throwing around the ball at four years of age,” he said.

Daniels said the community brought a large contingent to the tournament, which not only included parents, but also chief and council.
