4-H partners with local clubs for seed sales

A longtime youth organization is launching a national fundraising initiative.

4-H Canada, which offers its members a variety of hands on educational programs and aims to let youth learn by doing, will partner with local clubs to sell seeds, bulbs and roots.

Stefanie Nagelschmitz, chair of the Canadian 4-H Foundation said the new fundraising efforts involve not just the national body, but also local and regional organizations as well. Nagelschmitz explained the money earned will be split between the supplier, Vesey Seeds, and 4-H.

“For every $10 item that is purchased, for example, $4 goes back to Veseys to cover the product, the shipping and the program and then the remaining $6 is invested in 4-H in Canada,” she said.

Of the money that goes to 4-H, $3.50 would be kept by the local organization, $1.50 would go to the regional group, with the remaining dollar going to the 4-H Canadian Foundation.

The new initiative, which is currently a pilot was developed by the national body with input from local and regional groups. Nagelschmitz said this new fundraising campaign will give the organization access to more funds which are less restricted in terms of their use.

Along with providing the chance for the organization to raise money, Nagelschmitz said the program also gives participants a chance to test and develop entrepreneurship skills.

So far, Nagelschmitz said they have heard about some provincial clubs that are interested in taking part.

“We do know of some clubs in areas, in Saskatchewan who are already showing interest in signing up for the program,” she said.

Local organizations will have until the fall to decide if they want to take part.
