Fire department gets community support

The Waskesiu Fire Department is set to get new equipment thanks to some collaboration.

Recently Parks Canada along with the Waskesiu Foundation partnered to split the costs of new lockers for firefighters along with the purchase of a hydro vent nozzle.

Fire Chief Les Karpluk said the two organizations contribution is something that means a lot to the department.

“We’re a very small department with a small budget and to have the Waskesiu Foundation and Parks Canada step in and really donate $12,000 worth of equipment, that’s a very big thing for us,” he said.

Karpluk explained the new lockers, which will be Ready Racks will help firefighters better store their equipment by giving them more space and also allow for more airflow while it is hung up. Meanwhile the new nozzle will be a tool for firefighters to use for defensive firefighting.

“It’s really a new type of nozzle that’s out in the market, not too many departments have them in Canada, so we’re very excited about that,” Karpluk said.

Currently the fire department has 26 members, who along with Karpluk appreciate the community support. The fire chief said the support they get from the greater community says a lot.

“What I can tell you is the support for the fire department in Waskesiu by Parks Canada, the Waskesiu Foundation all the business owners, the people with cabins up there, it’s fantastic,” he said.
