Prince Albert-opoly hits store shelves

Prince Albert City Hall can now be bought for a bargain price of $250 and the cost to take a shuttle bus to the street fair will cost you $175.

Those are all part of a new Prince Albert version of the classic Monopoly game. The game was developed by Canadian toy game company Outset Media Corp, in partnership with Wal Mart Canada. Jean-Paul Teskey, senior vice president with Outset said the idea to have a Prince Albert version came about after Wal Mart reached out to all its stores across the country.

“And they said hey guys what stores in communities across the country would be interested and the store manager in Prince Albert said we would love to do it,” he said.

Outset’s team members then started the daunting task of deciding which landmarks to include in the game. Among the spaces players can land on is City Hall, Diefenbaker House, and the Farmer’s Market but there’s no mention of the Art Hauser Centre or the Diefenbaker Bridge.

“You know we are taking things like that as advice, so that if we ever do another one, which may or may not happen,” he said, adding they would also consider having a Go to Jail card in the next version.

That task may be more complicated, given that Prince Albert is home to a prison as well as a men’s and women’s correctional facility as well as a youth facility. paNOW made its own suggestion and asked Teskey if a future version of the game could possibly include a toll for the bridge.

“That would be a great idea,” he replied.

Teskey said he has found the games tend to get a better response in the smaller communities as compared to larger cities like Halifax or Victoria. Two weeks ago, 150 copies of the game were shipped to the Prince Albert Wal Mart store, and paNOW was informed by store management the games sold out in less than a week. Teskey promised to talk to his staff and have more games shipped out as soon as possible.
