The Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce along with its members are taking stock of the local economy.

Monday afternoon the organization hosted a barbecue at the exhibition grounds which saw a number of business owners and representatives on hand.

One of those business owners was Nelson Selinger of ANR Accounting. Selinger said his business was quite busy with lots of people needing book keeping and other services. Looking at his client base he said those working in real estate are doing well despite the market not being in great shape. He added he has some clients doing research on edible commodities who are also in good shape.

“That’s a new area, nobody’s doing this yet, but there doing very well,” he said.

Selinger said he does have some clients in construction and trades who are not doing as well.

Bill Chow, co-owner of the UPS Store said overall he thinks the economy is in an alright position and there is some real potential looking forward.

“I think there’s a lot of positive things for Prince Albert and area. I think when you take a look at the activity in the local area, lots of people are talking about the diamond mine and the mill, those things are out there,” he said.

Chow added the downturn in oil is still having some negative effects on the province’s economy overall. Currently Chow said his business is offering more services at his store, including printing while providing mailboxes for people who go away for the winter is a big service.

Tim Leson, who sits on the chamber’s board of directors said he thinks the city and area is doing well thanks to the diversity of the economy overall.

“We have the North, we have tourism, we have everything going with the farming here,” he said.

Leson said it is not good that construction is down, but he said the city is going in the right direction on that front by making more land available and is optimistic about it picking up.
