P.A. to be represented at world conference

A City of Prince Albert employee is set to take part in a world conference.

Lauren Haubrich, an aquatics programmer with the city will be travelling to Durban, South Africa in October to speak at the World Conference on Drowning Prevention (WCDP). Specifically, Haubrich will be speaking about the issues lifeguards face working in the sun and dealing with heat.

Haubrich got on the radar of the WCDP by helping to develop a pilot program in Saskatchewan which aimed to teach lifeguards about sun safety. This is not the first time Haubrich has travelled to speak about this topic as she has previously spoken at a conference in Vancouver.

City of Prince Albert Recreation Coordinator Curtis Olson said he is proud to be able to work alongside Haubrich and is happy that she is getting this opportunity.

“I think it’s just awesome I am excited for Lauren,” he said. “Everyday she comes to work and she just brings a passion to her job.”

Olson said Haubrich’s passion is important because they want people to enjoy coming to the facilities, while at the same time making sure the facilities are safe for users. He added Haubrich is also well respected by the staff who work with her.

Having an employee travel to speak at a world conference is also good for the city according to Olson as it provides a real learning opportunity.

“She’ll bring a lot of great things back to Prince Albert that we can also use in our aquatic area,” he said.
