Young child left in hot car at campground

A young child escaped a hot vehicle with no injuries, according to a spokesperson with Parkland Ambulance.

Paramedics were alerted Wednesday afternoon to a child in distress at the Candle Lake Provincial Park campground, but were called off, after hearing someone got the child out. Lyle Karasiuk with Parkland Ambulance told paNOW small children and pets should never be left behind in a hot vehicle.

“On a very hot day, say 30 degree [Celsius] heat, or 35 degree heat, that car in a matter of less than five to eight minutes is going to be hotter than an oven at 350 degrees and it’s going to do some significant damage,” he said, adding he heard stories where people have died.

The temperature at Candle Lake Wednesday afternoon was 27 C but would have felt more like 35 C with the humidity. Karasiuk said one common mistake people make is stopping for gas, leaving a child in the vehicle, while they run in to pay.

“Often we hear horror stories where people get side tracked, run into somebody else, they start looking for bargains around a local store and a few minutes turns into quite a few minutes. Next thing you know, they are running out to find something sadly has gone wrong,” he said.

Highs on Saturday are expected to be 29 C for the Prince Albert and Melfort areas, which would include local lakes. The Nipawin and Prince Albert National Park areas will be slightly cooler at 27 C.
