PAPS welcomes new recruits

A number of new recruits recently joined the Prince Albert Police Service’s ranks, as four new officers began full-time duties in June.

The new officers fulfilled the requirements of becoming service members, including written and physical exams, as well as 20 weeks of training at the Saskatchewan Police College in Regina.

“Most recently we were joined by Const. Dillon Husky, Const. Casey Muirhead, Const. Foster Coté and Const. Jason Anderson. They go through an intensive training program to prepare them for the following six months where they work with a field training officer here,” Prince Albert Police Chief John Bergen said.

“That’s working with an experienced member that can help guide them through their on-job training and ensure they are managing their workload appropriately, professionally and providing the community the service they expect from us.”

Bergen added new recruits bring energy to the police service, as well as a sense of positive excitement to take on a series of new challenges.

“It brings that excitement to the shift. It’s refreshing for all of our members,” Bergen said. “We are definitely a busy service with high demands, and high service expectations from the community. When we have someone that is excited to take on the new challenge it really refreshes the organization.”

Bergen added the process to become an officer is very demanding, and he believes each of the officers who have completed the training have earned their position and he feels proud of all new recruits.

“It’s everything that you hope and wish for,” Const. Muirhead said of his new role. “You want to affect your home and community and make a positive impact. You just want to be good at your job.”

In addition to the four new recruits who recently joined PAPS, an additional two recruits have recently begun the 20 weeks of training at the Saskatchewan Police College in Regina. Once their training is complete, the two new recruits will also be joining the Prince Albert Police Service.

“To have six new staff fill positions in this year alone is more than what often happens but we are definitely excited and looking forward to filling our vacancies,” Bergen said.
