Rural communities getting faster internet

Jul 6, 2019 | 4:19 PM

Residents in Shellbrook and a number of other rural communities now have access to better internet speeds.

Recently Sasktel announced they would be doubling the internet speed available to customers from 25 mega bites per second to 50. Along with Shellbrook, residents in Carrot River will also have access to higher speeds.

Greg Jacobs, external communications manager with Sasktel said people who opt for the new service will notice improvements.

“Their internet connection should be more responsive, this is really important for gamers or folks who are streaming high quality content,” he said.

Along with these improvements internet users will also be able to access content much quicker. Jacobs said the improved internet speeds are a by-product of improvements in DSL technology which allow Sasktel to push more bandwidth through their existing infrastructure.

“Essentially it gives us a larger pipe to push and faster speeds to push,” he said.

The increased internet speeds are getting a positive reception from Shellbrook mayor George Tomporowski.

“I think it’ll be really good from a business perspective, you know everything is done electronically these days,” he said.

Besides the opportunity for businesses, Tomporowski said as an individual user he would appreciate the improved speeds as it will mean a more reliable connection.
