City re-purposing old or damaged garbage bins for backyard composting

Staff at the City of Prince Albert are getting creative in efforts to encourage composting.

City staff took 35, old or damaged garbage/recycling bins and have converted them for backyard composting.

“It can actually be placed in the backyard and all those food scraps, grass clippings, any organic waste in nature can go in those bins,” Operations Manager Mohammad Kraishan said. “That’s the main purpose of this, to divert compost and food scraps from the landfill.”

Residents who wish to purchase one of the bins can do so at the Prince Albert landfill.

Once the bin is purchased and in a backyard, Kraishan there are important components of composting.

Kraishan said it’s a difference between green and brown materials. Green would be fresh grass clippings and food scraps. Brown material would be wood chips or old leaves, plus water.

He added flipping or stirring the material every once in a while will help with the composting process.

Once the material has broken down it will be high in nutrients and can be added to help enrich other soil.
