Rain forces changes at Canada Day celebrations

The weather ended up putting a damper on some Canada Day activities Monday evening, although the fireworks display was still on schedule according to the organizers.

At the riverbank the Prince Albert Multicultural Council, in conjunction with the Prince Albert Grand Council had planned to put on a Reconciliation Ceremony, but the weather forced the cancellation of that event.

However, despite the wet weather challenges organizers were pleased with how everything played out overall.

“It’s been a good turnout since we set up, 12 o’clock we started up until the rain, up until almost five o’clock it’s been a real good crowd,” said Michelle Hassler, executive director of the multicultural council.

Before the rains came, Hassler said the weather was nice with sun and a bit of wind.

This year marked a changed in location for the festivities as the event returned to the riverbank after many years at Kinsmen Park. Hassler said they were hearing good things about the change from those who came out.

“It’s a beautiful park, it’s a beautiful space,” she said.

Despite the wet weather, organizers said that the finale fireworks display was still going ahead around 10:30 p.m.
