Carlton celebrates class of 2019

The class of 2019 for Carlton Comprehensive Public High School has officially graduated.

Wednesday morning in a ceremony at the Art Hauser Centre 292 Grade 12 students received their high school diplomas to cap off their high school careers.

The Art Hauser was a packed not only with grads, but also parents and family who filled seats on the floor and the stands on the south side of the building.

This year’s graduation ceremony was the first one overseen by Principal Jeff Court. However, Court was not alone on stage handing out diplomas, as each student selected a teacher who they felt played an important role in getting them to graduation, who joined with the principal in the presentation.

This year’s valedictorian, Hannah Walker said there were diverse challenges students faced during their high school years but all led to their change and evolution as people over the four years. She also touched on what the end of high school truly means.

“All of us sitting here about to embark on the next chapter of our lives, we are ready to take on the real world,” she said. “Being nervous is the same as being excited. We can’t avoid change in life, so instead of avoiding it, it’s time we learned to embrace it.”

Along with encouraging the graduates to go out into the world and take on challenges, Court also spoke about a message he picked up from an ancient Chinese proverb which offered advice when it comes to pursing ones goals.

“If you put too much attention on the goal and not enough to get there, you won’t get anything done. Always remember that goals are important, but the path in getting there is what needs the attention,” he said.
