École St. Mary ready for graduation

École St. Mary High School students were decked out in blue Tuesday afternoon.

The school’s principal, Mark Phaneuf said this year’s crop of graduating students has one characteristic which stood out.

“We have students that got involved in the arts, we had students that got involved in civics, in sports achieved really at a high level academically, so I think the highlight for me is just knowing how engaged this group was both in and out of the classroom,” he said.

This year’s graduating class is 204 students, which is one of the largest in the school’s history.

Looking forward to the ceremony, which is set to take place Thursday at the Art Hauser Centre, Phaneuf said it is an honour to be able to hand out the diplomas to graduates given how many teachers and parents have been involved in getting the kids to this point.

“There’s only one person that gets to give out those graduation diplomas. I don’t take that for granted. I don’t take that lightly; it’s just such an honour to shake those kids’ hands and welcome them into the world as a graduate,” he said.
