Shoot for the Vitals raises money for organ donation

Rainy weather didn’t dampen the spirits of those taking part in the annual Shoot for the Vitals archery competition outside of Prince Albert on Saturday.

The sixth-annual event serves as a way to raise money for organ donations, while also hosting a family friendly weekend venue.

Tyler Harris, president of Shoot for the Vitals, told paNOW the importance of the event.

“All the money we raise from the 3D shoot goes back into the community for people who are struggling with organ donations,” Harris said.

“We had a number of family members who have had issues with organ donation starting with an uncle, grandpa, an aunt, a family friend … so it’s a very close to home issue for us.”

More than $15,000 has been raised through the annual archery shoot. Prices vary based on age for those looking to participate, but anyone is welcome to attend and spend a weekend outdoors, or practicing their archery skills.

A number of side activities take place throughout the two-day event such as raffles and giveaways – the winner of the raffle will go home with an APA custom bow on Sunday.

“We’re just trying to grow every years, the more shooters we have and the more support from people in the area, the more we can really just give back to the community,” Harris added.

“Any support that we can get is appreciated. People can come buy and just get a burger or put their name in the raffle or the 50/50 draw and it all makes a difference. You don’t have to have an archery background to come out and help out.”

Wide arrays of 3D targets with a varying range of difficulty are available for shooters, ranging in both difficulty and creativity. Simple, open field targets are available, however, Harris noted that he likes to be creative – installing targets such as a fully fleshed out campsite with a pesky raccoon rummaging through a cooler.

“It makes it a little more interesting and fun to have some of these different shoots. I like to try and be creative with the stuff that we have available for people to come out and enjoy.”

The event runs both Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to the public. Shoot for the Vitals is a registered location with Google Maps making the property easy to locate.
