Predators one win away from repeating as PGLL champions

After Saturday’s 11-7 victory over the Standing Buffalo Fighting Sioux, the Prince Albert Predators are one win away from repeating as junior champions of Prairie Gold Lacrosse League.

They have a 1-0 advantage in the series and can close it out with a victory in Game 2 at 1 p.m. on Sunday. If not, there will be a rubber-match Game 3 following the contest. All finals games will be played at the Kinsmen Arena.

Trey Duquette scored four goals for the Predators, the most he’s had in a single game all season. Tanner Vancoughnett had three goals and an assist, while Jackson Kowblick, Dillan Cochrane, Carson Remy and Steven Soyko also scored goals.

The Fighting Sioux had goals from seven different scorers. Sincere Toto had a goal and two assists while Sandis Laswisse had a goal and a helper.

The game was as tense and tight as you’d expect in the opening frame on a final series. Neither team scored two goals in a row as they traded goals back and worth, with the Predators carrying a slim 4-3 lead into the second. The game opened up a little in the second as the Predators earned an 8-6 lead heading into the final period.

The Predators’ defence stepped up big time as they didn’t allow a goal in about an 18-minute stretch from the end of the second period to late in the third on their way to an 11-7 victory.

The Predators won their only PGLL top-tier title last season, and did so at the Kinsmen.
