Open Wide!

Sometimes our brains are so used to seeing things the same way that we have always seen them, the way we were taught long ago or the way other people see them. If the way you are viewing a situation isn’t helping you, maybe you need to get your mind to ‘open wide’?

Recently at the dentist, besides the potentially controversial (but I think wonderful!) fact that my dental office provides warm chocolate chip cookies for my visit, there was another interesting conversation that I had with my hygienist.

Of course most people do not love going to the dentist, me being one of them, but it wasn’t until I volunteered at a homeless shelter that my perspective on my regular visits changed drastically.

At the shelter, I saw people whose teeth were in terrible disrepair and I saw people with no teeth at all. It wasn’t until that very moment that I realized my regular visits with the dentist were a privilege. One of many that I took for granted. One of many that I complained about.

#WakeUpCall

Some people don’t have the means to deal with their dental issues, never mind just cosmetically, some people have awful pain and can’t afford to go. They may not be able to send their children for regular visits. Some people aren’t even taught about dental hygiene. Some people share a toothbrush.

#TrueStory

I had an audience member once tell me how grateful she was for her toothbrush. I thought it was an odd thing to be thankful for until she told me that all the kids in her family (I think she said 8) had to share a toothbrush! Yikes!! Suddenly, I really loved my own personal toothbrush!

#Grateful

I don’t have to go to the dentist, I get to go. I don’t have to go grocery shopping, I get to go grocery shopping, I don’t have to take my kids to soccer, I get to…

Open wide, your mind that is, a simple re-frame can make all the difference in the way you see the world.

Focusing on what you get to do versus what you have to do, it’s just one more way to live Your Life, Unlimited.
