Fonstad, Schneider heading to Summer Development Camp

Jun 19, 2019 | 5:00 PM

Raider forward Cole Fonstad and Prince Albert native Braden Schneider are among a select group of junior hockey players that have been invited to Canada’s National Junior Team Sport Chek Summer Development Camp.

The camp, held in Plymouth, Mich. from July 27 to Aug. 4, serves as both a development opportunity for players and a part of the evaluation process for staff leading up to the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic.

Fonstad is coming off a 73-point regular season campaign for the Raiders placing him third in points on the team behind Brett Leason and Noah Gregor. A fifth-round selection of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Fonstad was second among all 2000-born players across the league, trailing only Luke Burzan of the Brandon Wheat Kings who produced 78 points.

As a second-year defender, Schneider stepped into a feature role on the Wheat Kings blueline this season, chipping in eight goals and 16 assists in 58 games while also finishing third on the team with a +13 rating, behind only Burzan and Stelio Mattheos.

“We’re very pleased with the group that will be brought together in Plymouth,” said Director of Men’s National Teams Shawn Bullock in a Hockey Canada release. “This is a development opportunity for some of the younger athletes, and it’s a great opportunity for our coaching staff and players to start developing a solid relationship ahead of the World Juniors.”

Fonstad previously represented Canada at the 2018 World Under-18 Hockey Championships in Russia, while Schneider has made three appearances in the maple leaf so far in his young career. The defenceman was the captain for Canada White at the 2017 World Under-17 Challenge, and represented Canada at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the 2019 World Under-18 Hockey Championships.

Born just five days after the Sept. 15, 2001 cut off date for this year’s NHL Entry Draft, Schneider will not be eligible be selected for another year.

Draft looming

The 2019 NHL Entry Draft will begin on Friday night in Vancouver with round one taking place in prime time, while rounds two through seven will be held on Saturday morning.

Raider forwards Brett Leason and Aliaksei Protas have both been ranked by NHL Central Scouting ahead of the event, with Leason listed at 25 and Protas at 44 among North American skaters.
