Klughart beats his idol at the Men’s Lobstick

Prince Albert’s Danny Klughart picked up his third Men’s Lobstick championship at Waskesiu Golf Course this Saturday, having already won in both 2017 and 2013.

But this year’s title will be even more special for Klughart, as he defeated Delisle’s Colin Coben in the Championship Flight match play finals to win. Coben was inducted into the Saskatchewan Golf Hall of Fame in 2012 after a storied amateur career and dominating the provincial scene, and has always been somebody that Klughart looked up too.

“That’s a guy I idolized growing up,” Klughart said. “We’ve had quite a few head-to-head matches that kind of went either way. Especially out here, he gets it around so well and putts so well up here. I knew I had to bring my A-game today.”

Klughart certainly did, he had a four-hole lead after the first four holes. He was able to hold onto that lead and end the match with an impressive 25-foot birdie putt on hole 15 for the championship.

“I got off to a fast start and Colin had a few bad holes at the start. But I know what he’s capable of, I couldn’t let him back in the match,” Klughart said “I just tried to stay focused one hole at a time and get it done as quick as possible.”

As for Coben, he was looking for the ultra-rare feat of holding both the Men’s Lobstick and Senior Men’s Lobstick titles at the same time, after winning the senior tournament last Thursday.

“I’m still happy to be in that final. You want to play better, I just didn’t get off to a good start,” Coben said. “Danny was up four after four, and that’s a tough gig against that guy. He played good all week, I was around him there all week and I saw him play. I just needed to make some putts today early and stay in the game, and I didn’t quite do that.”

Klughart defeated Garry Hagen, Doug Kozak, Trevor Bloom and Jason Galon to get to the finals.

Coben beat Tyler Zaba, Brad Moser and Landon Klassen and Michael Smith before the match with Klughart.

Klughart also won his first Lobstick Open, finishing at -3 under through two rounds to start the week.
