Pine Needle Mountain Bike and Music Festival raises funds for Little Red River Park

A rainy morning didn’t deter hundreds of participants, fans, and those looking for a great family-friendly event from attending the Pine Needle Mountain Bike and Music Festival Sunday.

The ninth annual event featured a variety of games and activities for youth, a children’s run, music and food, and the mountain bike races – which featured both solos and teams.

Festival organizer Mike Horn said the festival was designed both as a way to raise money, and give Prince Albert families an event the whole family could enjoy.

“We’ve got a six hour mountain bike relay that has individuals, two-person teams and four-person teams which started at 11 a.m., we’ve got six bands playing throughout the day, a kid’s running race which starts at 1 p.m. … it’s a full day,” Horn said.

“When we started the format the idea was to generate money for the community and have an event in Little Red River Park. We’ve been organizing mountain bike races for 20 years, but we wanted to do something more than that, we wanted to have a celebration of this park.”

Horn added that to-date more than $52,000 has been raised through the festival. Four years ago the decision was made to use money raised to directly improve the park and its facilities.

“Our next big project is replacing all of the trail lighting and upgrading them to LED’s. So that will be a culmination of funds raised last year and this year,” Horn said.

“In terms of a goal, the more the better but we’re happy with anything. We’re hoping to raise about $10,000 but we’ve been very fortunate and have a long list of local sponsors and businesses from P.A. that have supported us and contributed to the event to help make it better.”
