There was a long line up of people Friday, waiting for the doors to open at Prince Albert’s newest liquor store.

But with the city’s well publicized issues related to alcohol use, there are some who feel the city does not need another liquor store. Co-op’s Director of Marketing and Community Relations Jill Dumanski told paNOW Co-op takes its social responsibility to the community very seriously but also recognizes the need for a service.

“People do enjoy alcohol and they do buy it, so why not provide a safe space for people to buy it,” she said.

On Friday the store was seen distributing flyers promoting safe drinking guidelines. Dumanski said Co-op wants to works closely with groups like Mothers Against Drinking and Driving (MADD).

“For one of our Raiders barbecues, we donated to MADD to show that it’s important to us,” she said.

Co-op’s liquor store at Cornerstone opened just last December. Dumanski said there has always been a lot of interest for another store on the south side of the city.

“There’s been a lot of positive comments saying you know this is closer to our house and stuff so we just want to make sure that we are getting as many services as possible to the City of Prince Albert,” she said.

The new store creates 12 jobs for the city.
