City’s new skate park becomes work of art

Prince Albert’s newest skate park is scheduled to open later this week, but the artist who has been working for the past three weeks on the park’s designs, was busy applying the finishing touches on Tuesday.

Justin Enns, who lived in Hong Kong for 18 years before moving to Warman last year, was contracted by Malcolm Jenkins to spray paint the boards and ramps at the park. Enns, who has worked with various mediums of art work including sketching and painting, admitted he had never done anything on this scale.

“It certainly is a challenge but because there’s so much to be done, I feel like I learned quite a bit as I was going through it,” he said. “It’s definitely a challenge but a fun one.”

Prior to starting work at the park, Enns explained he had done a lot of research about Saskatchewan and Prince Albert. He also looked at designs that been done at other skate parks from around the world.

When asked how he felt about having his art work on permanent display for years to come, Enns said he was excited about that and also grateful he could make a contribution to the community.

“It means a lot to be a part of it and I think it will mean something to people who come here,” he said.

To help protect the art from other graffiti, as well as pucks during the winter months, Ray Bandet has applied a clear coat on all the boards. Bandet said he would like see more projects in the city, like the one at the skate park, possibly even a mural.

“To beautify the city’s downtown and such like this is excellent,” he said.
