In a sign that summer is set to unofficially kickoff, the last week of May is beginning with sweltering temperatures.

Environment Canada is projecting daily temps well above seasonal averages by mid-week.

“The warm weather is going to be relatively short, we’re in the mid 20’s today, moving up to the 30 C mark for Wednesday,” Dan Kulak, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada said. “The average for this time of year is 20 C, so about 10 degrees warmer than the long-term average.”

Kulak advised that sun safety is important and to limit your exposure of direct sunlight. For the especially warm days and even the mild ones.

“You can be sitting outside on a cool day, you’re going to get just as much UV as you will on a hot day. Heat does not contribute to sunburns, you have to be sun-smart all times of the year,” Kulak told paNOW. “Generally for physical symptoms, if you do feel over exerted, take a break get in the shade. Look out for each other, and certainly don’t leave your pets in vehicles.”

Kulak said the hot weather might come with a bit of hitch. A west-wind may blow smoke from Alberta’s wildfires towards Saskatchewan.

“It certainly depends on where the winds are going to be blowing from. I think maybe mid-week we could see some more smoke in Central Saskatchewan. How bad will it be in P.A? Right now, it’s a little bit early to say,” he said.
