History buffs and food connoisseurs were able to experience the history of Prince Albert on May. 25,

The Downtown Walking Food and Historical Tour – organized through the Prince Albert Historical Museum, saw those involved stopping at several restaurants throughout the tour, while also exploring the history of P.A.

Organizer Terra Lennox-Zepp told paNOW of the inspiration behind the event.

“We highlight the unique shops, restaurants and history of our downtown. We have a great historical significance in Prince Albert’s downtown that even some of our citizens don’t know about,” Lennox-Zepp said.

“We try to have a tour about once per month throughout spring and summer, we stop at approximately three restaurants and sample food, and we walk throughout the downtown area and discuss the historical importance of our buildings.”

A cost of $15 is associated with the event, which includes food from all three-restaurant stops, with all of the proceeds going towards the historical society.

Guiding the tour is Fred Payton, second-vice president of the board for the Prince Albert Historical Society.

“Prince Albert is actually the second oldest community in all of Saskatchewan, second only to Cumberland House, being founded in 1866. I think it’s important for people to understand how Prince Albert developed and the background of the community,” Payton said.

“Particularly we talk about the business core, and the buildings and what has existed in those buildings over the years. As well, we talk about the people that have inhabited these buildings and their stories.”

Payton added that he would hope all those interested in learning more about Prince Albert knew the city has a rich and wonderful history, which can be built upon to make a brighter future in the city.

The next tours are scheduled for June 15 and July 6.
