Local martial artists bring home hardware

Some Prince Albert martial artists came home with hardware following a competition in Saskatoon this weekend.

LDP Martial Arts athletes combined for 20 medals, including three gold, 10 silver and seven bronze medals from the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) Western Championships.

“There were over 300 competitors from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan and we had 13 students go there and they all did really well,” said LDP Martial Arts Head Coach Lucian Phillips.

Of the 13 students who went, 11 ended up on the podium. Of those 11, nine brought home multiple medals. The hardware was won for patterns and sparring. Phillips said his students generally bring home some awards when they go to competitions.

“We have a really good group of kids and they always seem to come out with a medal,” he said.

The coach said he was happy to have students Victoria Chaulk, Naomi Phillips and Allina Untila bring home gold medals for sparring. He said it has been an exciting time for the Prince Albert martial arts club. Recently, member Christina Vis returned from Germany after competing in the world championships. While Vis didn’t place in the competition, going to the international event means she is now highly ranked.

“She became number one in Canada,” Phillips said.

The next major competition for the LDP Martial Arts club will be nationals at Regina in November.
