The Prince Albert Safe Shelter for Women now has 22 new beds thanks to a donation from a local company.

Thursday afternoon Sleep Country Canada announced they would be donating the new beds along with pillows, pillow covers and waterproof covers and sheets.

Sherry Bates, assistant director of the Prince Albert Safe Shelter for Women said they appreciate the contribution.

“The donation is just absolutely insurmountable. I mean it will have a rippling effect for years to come. We are so pleased and we couldn’t be more thankful,” she said.

Bates said the shelter is one of the busiest in the province which makes the gift all the more needed. Currently they are licensed to house 26 women and a children and tend to operate at 95 per cent capacity. The donated beds will be used to replace ones currently at the facility.

“It’s a huge dollar amount. We receive adequate core funding, but we don’t receive funding directly for furnishings and so this is thousands and thousands of dollars that it’ll save us,” Bates said.

Lynn Martel, vice president of charitable initiatives with Sleep Country Canada said giving a donation to the shelter made sense to them for a variety of reasons. One specific reason is the company prides itself on helping people get a good night’s sleep.

“Oftentime the women come in there, it’s a huge decision for them to make to get to the shelter and then when they get there sometimes that’s the first good night sleep they’ve had in a long time,” she said.

Martel said they like to do donations when they come into a new community in order to get the word out about the company and what they like to do in the community. Martel added the company likes to work with shelters that help women and children, they then do their research to find which organization is the best fit.

“We really want to partner up with respected organizations,” she said.

Sleep Country estimates the donation is worth $10,000 to $15,000.
