Pitch in Week nears an end

May 12, 2019 | 1:13 PM

Prince Albert’s Pitch-In Week is coming to a close, following what Ward 3 City Councillor Evert Botha called a total success.

Pitch-In Week is a national campaign designed to help communities engage in good recycling practices and to encourage Canadians to improve communities and ecosystems.

It began May 6, and Botha said this year’s contributions exceeded those of last year. “This is my second year to host the community clean up for Ward 3, and councillor Miller has been doing this for nine years,” Botha said.

“We decided this year to see if we could raise funds for the Octagonal Building at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre. As councillors it’s an opportunity for us to divert unnecessary loads to the landfill so we focused on things like metal recycling, electronics, recyclables like pop cans and the general separation of yard waste from garbage.”

Although an exact number has not been set for funds required to update the Octagonal Building, Botha said this was a great start.

“Today is the last day, so we will be wrapping up at 8 p.m. tonight,” Botha said.

“Our partner Loraas has been great and brought by extra bins, so hopefully once everyone has wrapped up their Mother’s Day lunch and church we will get some more people by.”

Last year Pitch-In Week saw 12 bins filled with materials, according to Botha, who added that more than 15 bins had been filled as of 12 p.m. today, with one more bin nearly full.

“This means we have less garbage around the community, and overall we will have a cleaner, safer more secure community.”
