Two students at École Vickers School are being recognized by the Royal Canadian Legion for their literary and artistic work.

Wednesday afternoon at a school assembly, Camryn Cooling received a pair of certificates from the local Legion for her poster which was recognized as being the best in zone and district. Rylee McKay won third place in zone competition for a poem she wrote. The works were done as part of the Canadian Legion’s annual Remembrance Day poster and literary competition.

“We would like to see the students participate because the vets are disappearing. There are some new ones, you know, but the Second World War and the Korean [veterans] are basically gone,” Deputy Zone Commander Royal Canadian Legion Branch 2 in Prince Albert Mel Osolinsky said.

The first level of judging happens at the school level and the best submissions were passed on to the local legion judges. Successful submissions have the ability to move up all the way up to the national level. Osolinsky said he is happy to see the competition continue into the future.

“We’re very proud of that. There are some really decent works that are done in the schools,” he said.

Perry Acorn, who teaches art and music at École Vickers School said the legion’s annual poster and literary competition provides kids a unique opportunity.

“It’s a way for them to create their own message given the theme of Remembrance Day,” he said. “We had one student win across Canada.”
