Art Hauser decibel reading extremely high during playoffs

The alarm has gone off at the Art Hauser Centre.

Raider fans perched atop their milk crates have been noisily cheering on their beloved team during the WHL playoffs. Fans were making an especially thunderous clamor, during games one and two of the Rogers WHL series final this past weekend.

Barry Mihilewicz with Big Drum Media, works as a video producer and sound technician during Raider game days.

Mihilewicz was on hand during game two of the series this past Saturday with a decibel reader.

“When the Raiders scored, especially those first couple of goals, it was reading upwards of 113-114 decibels,” Mihilewicz told paNOW.

“My ears were kind of funny the next day.” Donna Boruch, long-time season ticket holder.

While online sources vary, the comparative noise levels puts the 114 decibel mark somewhere between an ambulance siren (110 dB) and a rock concert (120 dB).

Mihilewicz partly attributes the loud noise to the acoustic qualities of the Art Hauser.

“We’ve got a really low ceiling, so sound is bouncing off ceiling and walls right away,” Mihilewicz explained. “Some of these bigger arenas, the sound gets absorbed by the bigger volume of the arena.”

Donna Boruch a season ticket holder since the early ’70s said this is the loudest she’s ever experienced the Hauser.

“It’s comparable, but I think a little bit louder, especially the night they had all the bells in the building,” Boruch said. “My ears were kind of funny the next day.”

Boruch is very proud of the team and all the work they’ve done this season. She added that the atmosphere was electric all year.

“We don’t have a big rink, but we’re passionate about our hockey team,” Boruch said.

The Raiders will play the next three games in Vancouver, with Game 3 going tonight.
