While it’s a job requirement to stay fit, some firefighters know its also a requirement to make it in the annual firefighter calendar.

Buckland Fire and Rescue firefighter, Forest Bihun is one of 12 provincial firefighters in the running to be featured in the 2020 edition of the Saskatchewan Firefighter’s calendar.

Bihun said all the money from the calendars goes toward the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“Anyone in the firefighting business, obviously we do it to help people, so doing something to support the Children’s Hospital is a big thing for us,” Bihun said.

Bihun is a second-year nursing student and said he may potentially look at working at the hospital when he completes his studies.

“It’s something I’ve looked at, I’ve always enjoyed working with kids. I used to volunteer at a children’s camp in the summer as a teenager. [It’s] either that or working in emergency.” Bihun told paNOW. “I like the firefighting, the adrenaline of doing emergency type medical work.”

As Bihun prepares for the competition, he had to make some changes and sacrifices to his eating habits.

“I’ve had to cut back on my meals. With power lifting, I could pig out on pizza. I never had to worry about it,” he said.

Diet changes and workout tips were something that Chanelle Weir helped out with.

Weir, also a Buckland Fire and Rescue firefighter was the March feature in the 2019 calendar.

While Bihun said he’s not totally set on a month if chosen, he wouldn’t mind hanging on the wall in December.

Online voting is open until Thursday. On Thursday evening prospective calendar models will meet at Casino Regina for a live vote. This combined with the online numbers, will choose the featured firefighters.
