It was a night to remember for sports fans in Prince Albert, as the 2019 inductees to the Sports Hall of Fame were honoured at the Ches Leach Lounge.

Eight individuals were honoured during the ceremony Saturday, with inductees being place in one of three categories – Athlete, Builder, and Meritorious Service. The Prince Albert Gymnastics Club was also recognized as the Sports Organization of the Year.

Among those inducted were Don and Ethel Hlewka, owners of Prince Albert’s Minto Bowl. Minto Bowl was purchased by them in 1968, and has been a mainstay for those in the bowling world since. Don accepted the award on behalf of his late wife Ethel.

“It means a lot to be inducted. I wish my wife could be here but I know she would be very proud,” Hlewka said.

“It’s a privilege and a pleasure.”

Hlewka added the importance of volunteering in the community, and encouraged all residents of Prince Albert to become involved in sports in the community.

Also inducted was Blair Hoffman, in both the Athlete and Meritorious Service categories. Hoffman has spent the majority of his life involved in hockey, baseball and slo-pitch. From 1960 through 2018 Hoffman did not miss a season of either baseball or hockey.

“The induction ceremony tonight means everything that it could possibly mean to any athlete or anyone who has ever done any volunteer work,” Hoffman said.

“I’ve never viewed what I’ve done as work. None of the inductees tonight do it for the recognition, we do it because we have a passion for sports and a passion for the City of Prince Albert.”

Hoffman also noted the importance of volunteerism, and encouraged community members to become involved with an organization they believe in. Hoffman also noted his success is due to his wife Wendy, and thanked her and his children for their continued support.
