City to soon start street sweeping

The City of Prince Albert will soon begin its annual round of street sweeping, which begins April 29. Street sweeping crews have already been out in targeted areas in the past two weeks where conditions have allowed.

Street-sweeping operations follow the same priority schedule as snow clearing within the city, with arterial streets first, collectors and bus routes second, downtown third, and residential areas fourth according to Brent Kennedy, roadways manager with the City of P.A.

“When we start next week, weather depending, it will take us about five or six weeks to go through the entire city,” Kennedy said. “You have to watch out for the dust and stuff when you’re driving, and the machines can only move so fast so we ask drivers to be cautious when approaching them.”

Kennedy noted crews will use a variety of equipment ranging from workers with brooms, skid-steers, and tandem trucks following sweepers.

“This year will be a little bit heavier than normal following this winter,” Kennedy said. “But we don’t expect it to take any longer than normal. We’ll be putting up signs 12 hours before we start sweeping, and we just ask everyone to please move their vehicles in advance.”

Street sweeping is conducted each year to clean city streets by removing sand and debris left behind from the winter. According to Kennedy, this work helps prevent material from entering the city’s storm sewer system, and improves road safety within the city.
