Local educator wins NDP nomination for P.A. Carlton

The man who will challenge Joe Hargrave in the next provincial election says he is confident he can win.

Troy Parenteau has been nominated the NDP candidate for the riding of Prince Albert Carlton. The riding has been held by the Sask Party since 2007 but Parenteau told paNOW he felt the tide was turning.

“It’s a riding we have done better in election year over election year so it will definitely be a riding the whole province will be watching and a riding we are very confident we can take,” he said.

The nomination meeting was held Thursday night at Calvary United Church. Among those in attendance were provincial NDP leader Ryan Meili and Nicole Rancourt, Prince Albert’s member of the legislative (MLA) for Prince Albert Northcote. Parenteau admitted it was a very big night for him, but added the real work was just beginning.

“I’m looking forward to getting out into the community and delivering a message of hope and inspiration and the change we need here in Prince Albert and Saskatchewan,” he said.

Prior to the nomination meeting, Parenteau told paNOW education was one of his central campaign issues. The morning after his nomination Parenteau’s tone had not changed and said he was still deeply concerned about the cuts made to the education system over the past four years.

“People are not happy when children are moving out of the province to receive supports in Alberta and B.C. or when we see children losing the supports they need to be successful. That sticks with people,” Parenteau said.

The provincial election is scheduled for Oct. 26, 2020.
