City wants to help property owners deal with graffiti

The City of Prince Albert is looking to help out property owners whose buildings have been defaced by graffiti.

To do this, the city is again making paint kits available to residents so they can remove graffiti.

Dan Sadlowski, assistant parks manager with the city, said it is important for property owners to remove graffiti from their buildings.

“The faster you remove it, the less likelihood of it returning to that area, so it’s very important to get rid of it as soon as you can,” he said.

The kits, which are supplied free of charge contain one gallon of paint, a roller or brush, a paint tray and a set of gloves.

To take advantage of the program, property owners need to go down to city hall and visit the community services department where they can fill out a form. Once they have applied for the program, Sadlowski said there is a process to verify the request, which usually takes one day.

“I receive the form, go check out the property [to] see if it’s valid, then I approve it, then the home owner gets that receipt in the mail, they go to the paint store produce this receipt and they’re all set,” he said.

According to Sadlowski the city has been running this program for around 10 years. Last year 30 kits were handed out to property owners. The numbers vary, Sadlowski said.

“I know some years we’ve had 30, some years we’ve had 40, some years we’ve had 20, so it just depends,” he said.
