Yard Waste collection program set to resume

The City of Prince Albert’s Paper Bag Yard Waste Collection Program will soon resume and the city is asking residents to be mindful of what they’re putting into their bags.

Yard waste collection will resume May 2, and will run into November, depending on when the snow returns. Yard waste is picked up on the same day as regular recycling pickup.

Waste collection calendars were delivered by the city door to door last November.

Residents can also find their area and collection dates on the City of Prince Albert website, where you can also set up garbage and recycling pick-up reminders.

Nisar Ghani, sanitation manger with the City of Prince Albert told paNOW about the program.

“The bags used to be plastic, however, they don’t decompose, so the city made the change to use paper bags in 2017,” said Ghani. “The bags are specifically for yard waste such as grass clippings or leaves, nothing else should be put into the bags.”

In addition, the yard waste must not be placed on the street until the program begins. Recycling and yard waste must be placed out for collection before 7:30 a.m. on the scheduled day. Yard waste is collected free of charge at the landfill.

In 2018, 1,800 metric tonnes of yard waste were diverted from the landfill through the curbside yard waste pick-up program.
