Montgomery the good luck charm the Raiders needed to beat the Blades

Sean Montgomery was a good luck charm for the Prince Albert Raiders, in their second-round series victory over the Saskatoon Blades.

The Raiders were a perfect 4-0 in the series when Montgomery scored a goal.

Montgomery got a hat trick in Game 1’s 6-1 victory, he got the game winner in Game 2’s 3-2 win, scored the game’s final goal in Game 5’s 6-1 victory and got the insurance marker in Game 6’s 6-3 victory.

“He’s a huge leader on our team. He’s a 20-year-old guy. Tons of games in this league, so he’s got the experience,” Raiders captain Brayden Pachal said. “He comes to play every single night, he battles and he’s the definition of a playoff guy.”

Montgomery had six goals in the series and has seven in the playoffs. Both of those figures are second only to teammate Dante Hannoun this postseason.

“Obviously, it’s nice to chip in offensively,” said Montgomery, after coming off his career-best regular season of 29 goals and 59 points in 67 games. “But the nicer thing is the win, at the end of the day. So we’re happy with that.”

No Raider has played more games than Sean Montgomery. He’s been a Raider longer than any of the coaches including head coach Marc Habscheid, and longer even than general manager Curtis Hunt. Montgomery played in 345 regular season games, which is a Raider record. He’s also played in all 22 games the Raiders have played in since the 2016 postseason.

This journey into the third round of the postseason means an awful lot to Montgomery.

“It’s nice. We haven’t been past the first round even in years past, so it’s a great feeling right now,” Montgomery said. “We’ll enjoy tonight and get ready for the next round here.”

That next round will be the WHL Eastern Conference Finals against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The Raiders had a 3-1 record against the Oil Kings this year.

The Raiders will play the Oil Kings on Friday and Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre for Games 1 and 2. Games 3 and 4 will be at Rogers Place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
