Local venue, sisters take home Country Music Awards

For the 30th year, the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards (SCMA) were handed out this weekend in Saskatoon.

Artists from across the province gathered to see who would take home some of the top awards.

One local establishment, Prince Albert’s E.A. Rawlinson Centre was among the winners, taking home the Country Music Venue of the Year award.

General Manager Roxanne Dicke said this is the first time the venue has won something like this through the SCMA’s.

“We have a long history with the SCMA and with country music in general, so we’re really excited it was acknowledged (on Saturday),” Dicke said.

“We really brought a lot of great, incredible artists and so many people through our venue that just enjoyed it and have had a great time.”

Dicke said country music is all about telling stories so it helps to bring the community together.

The SCMA’s were also a good night for local Trudel sisters Jay and Jo.

The pair come from a very musical family from the Albertville area and are no strangers to the SCMA’s. The Trudel family won Group of the Year in 2016.

Jay and Jo branched out as a duo around a year ago and took home the Roots Artist of the Year award this weekend.

“It’s just really great and an honour to be recognized by the SCMA’s. We’re just really surprised and really grateful,” Jo said.

She said they have a lot of things in the works right now.

“We are currently in the process of a crowd funding campaign to fund our next album, which we are going to be recording in May,” Jo said.

The hope is to release the album in 2020.

“We’re really excited for everyone to hear our new music and to hit some festivals and shows this summer.”
